Five hydroponics mistakes that quietly cost you a harvest
Almost every disappointing grow we hear about comes back to the same handful of habits. None of them look dramatic on the day. All of them show up at harvest.
1. Guessing at pH
Nutrient uptake collapses outside the right pH band, and plants show it as a deficiency you then try to fix by feeding more. Buy a pen, calibrate it monthly, and store the probe wet.
2. Overfeeding early
Young plants need far less than the bottle suggests. Start at half strength and work up while you watch the leaf tips.
3. Ignoring root zone temperature
Warm reservoirs hold less dissolved oxygen and invite root disease. In an Auckland summer a chiller or simply moving the tank off a concrete slab makes a real difference.
4. Under-ventilating
An extraction fan is not just about smell. It controls humidity, keeps CO2 topped up and stops leaf surface temperatures climbing under lights.
5. Not writing anything down
Feed strength, pH, room temperature, what you changed. Five lines a day turns a mystery into a pattern you can fix.
